The Robinson track and field team is currently preparing for their 2018 regional competition. With regionals only a week away, the 12 students that are competing are excited for the upcoming event.

Representing Robinson, there will be four girls running in the 4x8m, two runners in the two mile, two students throwing shot put, one throwing discus, and four girls running in the 4x100m.

The team competed in the regional competition last year and one runner, Destiny Thomas (’18), advanced all the way to states. For Thomas, the expectations are still set high and she is expected to go beyond regionals and to be right where she was last year as a state finalist.

“I expect to do a lot better this year,” Thomas said. “My goal is to get on the platform anywhere from eighth to about fourth, considering where I’m seated at right now, as far as being first in the district.”

Kailyn Morman, the girls head track coach, has high hopes for the team.

“When I look at the distance kids, especially the ones that are in the two mile, I think that we definitely have a chance at moving out of regionals and into states,” Morman said. “We’re hoping that the competition is similar to what it was last year and that they can push themselves and bring themselves up to that level where they were last year.”

One of the only two male students participating in regionals, Ethan Geiger (’20), will be running the two mile. After his rookie season last year, Geiger is set to improve for better results.

“Last year at regionals I actually did not do too well because I mentally gave up on my race. I knew that I wasn’t going make it to states,” Geiger said. “This year, I think I’m going to do much better because this season has been going so much better. I have a pretty good chance this year.”

The regional track competition will be held on Thursday, April 26 at Charlotte High School (1250 Cooper St, Punta Gorda, FL 33950).
