On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Robinson boys lacrosse took on the Sickles Gryphons at home. Going into the match, the Knights knew it was going to be a challenge, facing a sickles attack headlined by Florida Southern commit Brody Poppa. The team’s concerns were justified immediately, with the Gryphons starting hot and scoring 11 in the first quarter. Sickle’s relentless attack, coupled with an absence of RHS star defensive captain Will Heath (’27) due to an undisclosed injury, simply proved too much for the Knights to handle. Even with heroic attempts by Attacker Bryce Woody (’27), who managed to score two goals, the Robinson offense was unable to get any significant pressure, and the team eventually fell to Sickles 17-3. However, the team isn’t letting the loss define them. Instead, Robinson is already working to improve on the mistakes they made.
“As a team, we just need to communicate better and bring some energy,” defenseman Mason Lucius (’27) said.
In a team sport, and especially in lacrosse, communication is essential. With such narrow windows for opportunity, especially with the crushing Sickles offense bearing down on them, better communication could allow the Knights to see more success in building attacks out of the back and putting sustained pressure on the Sickles defense. Unfortunately, not every issue with the team can be solved through practice.
“We faced a challenging opponent, and we only started finding a rhythm late in the 4th quarter,” captain Bryce Woody (’27) said. “The team is really young. We have six freshmen starting, which is a lot for lacrosse, and I think the only thing that went wrong is just inexperience.”
Although it may be painful, losses like these are essential in providing players with the experience they need to develop, helping the team create its next generation of stars and reliving the success they experienced last season.
