On Tuesday, Nov. 18, the Robinson Knights women’s soccer team battled Plant at the Jack Peters Stadium. They fought hard throughout the night, but eventually fell short, losing 0-1. Despite the final score, however, the team showed resilience and strength that they will carry through the rest of the season.
“Yesterday’s game ended not in the way we all wanted, but we did walk away with a lot of mini wins,” Girls Captain Lane Virgil (’27) said. “Defense had played the best they had all year, our offense went ahead to head with a defense that has never let a shot in.”
Plant’s record this year is 5-0-1, and having only lost one game this season so far, the Panthers entered the night confident. But Robinson’s record isn’t far behind, being 4-0-2. The Knights went into the match ready and willing to put up a fight, knowing that they were able to put up a fight against the Panthers.
“Our freshman goalie really stepped up, which was amazing to see. Although we lost 0-1, there was a lot to take away from the game that can only help us get better for the even tougher games ahead,” Virgil (’27) said.
Despite this being her first year of high school soccer, Goalie Daisy Roberts (’29) has been making waves as a freshman goalie. With an incredible 16 saves this game, she kept the game close until the final whistle. This was her first time as the starting goalie for the team, and she proved she could hold her own in one of the hardest games of the season.
The team’s unity was shown on the field, as players supported one another through the tight game. The camaraderie on the field was even felt in the stands.
“I feel like we really came together as a team and battled against Plant. I’m really proud of all my teammates and how we rallied together. It’s a win in my books,” Forward Sadie Proveaux (’27) said.
The score remained 0-0 until the final 5 minutes, with both teams getting chances to score, but being evenly matched. With both teams playing so hard, it felt like it could’ve gone either way. Our defense was working intensely, and Roberts (’29) was saving shot after shot.
After a tiring first half, Robinson still stayed organized in the back and didn’t let the Panthers get too comfy. Captain Sophia Rodriguez worked hard trying to take the ball in midfield, and Captain Jayla Pettiford worked hard to get the ball in possession as a forward.
With the clock winding down, Plant finally found a small opening in the net and managed to score. But the Knights kept fighting until the very last second, not letting Plant’s goal shake them. They showed the kind of grit that the players and coaches alike were proud of throughout the game.
Even though the loss was unexpected for Robinson, the Knights left the field knowing that they had shown massive growth otherwise. The game showed how they could compete with one of the top teams in the district with grace and intensity, which will set the tone for the rest of the season.
The Knights’ next game is on Dec. 2, where they will play Sickles.
