With the school year coming to an end, the tennis postseason has begun. On April 10, both boys’ and girls’ tennis teams took place in a two-day tournament beginning their postseason by competing and advancing past the district-level competition.

“We set our team goal at the beginning of the season to advance out of districts. I am excited to say we met that goal,” Girls’ Tennis Coach Michelle Verdasco said.

So far, this tennis season has been one full of great success, far exceeding initial expectations.

“I think our season has gone better than anyone could have expected and it has been super fun for the whole team to be able to make it this far and have the chance to go even further,” doubles first seed and singles second seed Nate Clement (’25) said.

In a technical sport, tennis being a prime example, pure grit and brute force are never enough to achieve a successful season, but it’s the small technique, along with proper preparation, which allows for a strong finish to the season.

“If we can be mentally tough and fit with proper nutrition and hydration, I believe the girls will find a way to hit their money shots in key points,” Verdasco said.

During their regular season, the boys’ tennis team had a 12-3 record overall with a 10-1 district record. The girls had a similar district record, showing only one loss; however, they had a 9-5 overall record.

With matchplay in tennis being so isolating, especially for singles, mental strength is a very important factor in having a good season.

“I feel my strength has been my focus and determination during matches,” girls’ first seed in both singles and doubles Sophie Le (’26) said.

While tennis is very isolating during matches, the real teamwork is seen outside of game day.

“Our strengths have been our team camaraderie,” boys’ first seed in both singles and doubles Maxwell Ruyle (’23) said. “Everyone on the team wants the best for each other and works hard to become the best player they can [be].”

As the season approaches its close, fond memories have been made throughout the year.

“I think the feeling when I won the match to secure a spot in states was my favorite part of the season,” Clement said. “However, the last match at districts that our [third seed] Auggie was in, was super close and exciting.”
