When deciding which movie to watch, no matter what mood I am in, I will always go straight for a coming-of-age movie. As a teenager, there is nothing more relatable than a coming-of-age film. They deal with everything from teenage angst to the pressure of growing up and the reluctance to leave childhood behind.

Although coming-of-age films may seem targeted toward a teenage audience, the genre has a lot of variety that can appeal to almost any age group. For example, many children’s movies can be considered coming-of-age films. Every Disney princess movie deals with a teenager or young woman overcoming a challenge and finding who she is.

Coming-of-age movies can even easily appeal to adult audiences. These films deal with many mature themes and emotions. On top of that, every adult was a teenager at one point. Watching coming-of-age movies allows many older audiences to reminisce upon their past. They are immediately transported back to their youth and are able to sympathize with the protagonist as though they were a teenager again.

Coming of age refers to any movie that watches its protagonist grow from childhood to adulthood. They usually focus more on internal dialogue and character development than action, but they are far from boring. However, coming of age is a very versatile genre. Although it tends to stray away from action, there are plenty of examples coming of age action movies such as “Spiderman Homecoming.”

This versatility is one of the many reasons why coming-of-age movies can appeal to anyone. Since their only requirement is focusing on a teenager growing into adulthood, coming-of-age movies can span across and cover many genres.

Other than action, coming-of-age movies can have romance, drama, comedy, and so much more.

As a result, no other genre can even begin to compare to coming-of-age movies. While coming of age has a little bit of everything, other genres are very polarizing. Rom-Coms are way too cheesy. Dramas are long and boring. Sci-fi isn’t relatable at all. And horror movies will keep you awake for far too long at night. Why would anyone want to watch any of these genres when they can get a taste of each in a coming-of-age film of their choice?

Coming of age truly has it all. Coming of age romance- “Five Feet Apart.” Coming of age comedy- “Superbad.” Coming of age drama- “The Edge of Seventeen.” I could go on and on. There is a perfect coming-of-age film for every mood.

When looking for a movie to watch, there is only one reasonable choice: a coming-of-age movie.
