There’s something electric about Friday night lights. Whether you’re in the stands repping school merchandise, screaming chants and doing flips on the track or on the field playing your heart out, football games have a way of pulling everyone together.
Sure, not everyone is obsessed with football. Personally, I couldn’t tell the difference between a field goal and a touchdown. Some people are there for band, cheerleading or manning the snack booth. Others show up just to hang out with friends under the lights and avoid doing homework. But that’s the point: football games are one of the few school events that truly bring all types of students together. Freshmen, seniors, athletes, band kids, and everyone in between can come out and feel like they belong.
It’s more than just a game. It’s about the shared energy in the crowd when our team does something good. The screams of the student section. The themed dress-up nights. The entertaining halftime dances. These moments build community and give us memories that last way longer than any quiz grade.
Football games also give people a chance to show off school pride. Whether it’s painting your face, waving a homemade sign or simply cheering with your friends, showing support builds unity. Football games are one of those times where I truly feel like I’m in one of those classic all-American schools, and we’re all bonded together over more than just being forced to show up in the same place every day. Even if we lose, we do it together, and that’s what matters.
In a school year packed with stress and pressure, football games are a reminder to let go, show up and have fun. So even if most of us don’t even know the score, they give us a reason to come together and celebrate something bigger than ourselves: being part of a community. And that’s what school spirit is really all about.
