Infused with the spirits of the holiday season, Knights celebrated Robinson’s winter sports with its third pep rally of the year in the gymnasium on Friday, Dec. 1. Planned by the Student Government Association (SGA), the theme was Winter on the Beach, featuring the upperclassmen as snow and underclassmen as sand.

“The preparation for the pep rally was a little challenging because we had Thanksgiving break right before the pep rally, but this was also good in some ways because our PR committee was able to do an amazing job creating the decorations,” Senior Class President Tara Kuklen (’24) said. “We wanted to do something new and creative for the theme. Since we live in Florida, it is never truly winter, hence the idea of snow vs. sand for the theme.”

The rally began with two performances. First, the Spirit Boys danced to the iconic “Mean Girls” “Jingle Bell Rock” dance. The crowds got hyped as they danced synchronously and performed several stunts, but no one performs better stunts than the Robinson Competitive Cheer team. Cheers were heard from all over the stands as they flipped through the air.

“I thought we performed super well especially considering it’s the beginning of the competitive season and we have not had a lot of full outs yet. The crowd’s energy was definitely a factor in our success and it feels really good to be able to showcase Robinson Cheer as the powerhouse we are,” said Sara Lebron (’24), a Backspot for the team.

No pep rally is complete without its games. One of the new games included in this pep rally was teacher sumo wrestling. Teachers dressed up in turkey sumo wrestling suits and fought until the other was pinned down on the ground. The first round was between history teachers Alexander Barron and Kevin Mccray and the second round was between science teacher Melissa Golden and school nurse Brianna Godfrey; Barron and Godfrey were the winners. Another new game was cheer basketball. The cheer team was to perform a stunt where the flyer formed a hoop with her arms. Representatives from each grade threw their pompoms like basketballs.

“Playing the cheer basketball was super fun and I really enjoyed being the basket because it made the experience more enjoyable,” said Maile Abell (’26), a Flyer for the team. “Also, the fact that my friend was the one shooting the poms made it even better.”

The winter sports were then introduced one by one as they ran a lap around the gym. Robinson’s sports include competitive cheerleading, soccer, wrestling, basketball and colorguard. The captains, and their substitutes, from each sport then participated in a game of musical chairs, where wrestling team member Arron McCarty (’26) was the winner.

The last game was the Teacher vs Student Basketball game. Teachers included math teacher Steven Smith, history teacher Gerald Batista, social studies teacher Donald Pippin, school officer Heister and others. After several dunks and three-pointers, the students won against the faculty, 9-7.

The pep rally ended with the traditional class chant. The senior class was the first to be eliminated. After three more heated rounds, the class of ’26 took home a win.

“Even though we were outnumbered by every other grade, collectively we had great school spirit. Hopefully, at the next pep rally, we have more seniors join us,” Shoira Afandikhonova (’24) said.

About the Contributors
Cecilia Cheng
Cecilia Cheng, Print Managing Editor
Cecilia Cheng is a senior at Robinson and the Print Managing Editor of Knight Writers. This is her third year on staff and her third year as an editor. A self-proclaimed "Swiftie," Cheng is constantly listening to some form of pop music, but her current favorites include Taylor Swift, Clairo and Pheobe Bridgers. When she's not listening to music, Cheng can be found taking photos, hanging out with friends, thrifting or catching up on her favorite TV shows. As of right now, her absolute favorite show is "Heartstopper," but it fluctuates frequently. This love of TV and movies is reflected in her large discography of reviews on the Knight Writers website and former position as the A&E editor for two years. Cheng makes it clear that A&E is her favorite section. Although she is a big fan of A&E, Cheng enjoys writing articles regardless of their section. "My favorite thing about journalism is the storytelling aspect of it," Cheng said. "I love how I’m able to express my opinion and give people that are underrepresented a voice as well." Outside of journalism, Cheng is involved in many other aspects of the Robinson community, holding positions as the Secretary of Women in STEM and the Social Media Manager of Mu Alpha Theta. Despite her connections to the school, Cheng is excited to graduate and see what awaits her. She hopes to head to her top college, Northeastern, where she plans to major in Biology. However, she isn't prepared to forget her time as a Knight Writer and plans to pursue her journalistic interests as well. "Right now, I’m looking to go to college and major in Biology, to go the pre-med track. I haven’t decided where I want to go yet, but I really hope I get into Northeastern. Also, if it’s possible, I want to double major in Journalism or I would join my college’s newspaper." (Profile by Charlotte Stone)
Araya Stearns
Araya Stearns, Senior Staff Writer
Araya Stearns is a senior at Robinson and a senior staff writer for Knight Writers. This is her second year on staff. An essential part of Stearns is her love for sports. At Robinson, she plays both flag football and softball. She loves the flag team she's a part of, aiding her love of the sport overall. The same applies to softball, which Stearns has been involved in since her early years. "Softball, I've been playing since, like, the age of four, so meeting new people and having more friends due to softball is a really big thing for me," Stearns said. After her time at Robinson, Stearns plans to keep moving forward on the softball track, hoping to pursue the sport throughout college and strive for the pro-leagues. Wanting to stay active even after college, a career in physical therapy or training is in her sights. Besides sports, Stearns loves her share of country music. Artists like Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen are common in her everyday playlist. Like many right now, Stearns has been enjoying the new volume of "Stranger Things," eager for the new season to come out in her senior year. Dialing down on the intensity, her favorite movies are typically from Disney, considering that she's surrounded by younger siblings. She finds movies like "Luca" fun to watch by herself or with others. This year, Stearns wants to keep her focus on the sports section, mainly attending sports games and taking pictures for our galleries. She loves the atmosphere of any sports game, keeping her ambitious to improve her photography skills throughout her junior year. (Profile by Faith Rowland)
