ISSUE 1: Why Be a Person When You Can Be a Dragon?

Despite the small dragon boating community in Tampa, senior Alex Ollikkala was able to hone his skill and find his way to the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships.

The 2023 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships were held from Aug. 7 to 13 in Pattaya, Thailand. These competitions are hosted by the International Dragon Boat Federation every odd year. This year, Ollikkala, one of Robinson’s very own students, competed and placed second for the US National Under 24’s Team.

Dragon boating combines aspects of canoeing and rowing. Teams consisting of between 12 and 22 rowers compete in canoe like rafts decorated to look like dragons.

However, Ollikkala hasn’t always been interested in dragon boating. He actually started off rowing before taking a break and eventually making the switch to dragon boating about two years ago. Despite this unexpected switch, Ollikkala was able to find a position that suited him better.

“[I am] the steersperson… I steer in the back and steers for dragon boats have a lot more control than steers for rowing,” Ollikkala said.

As the steersperson, Ollikkala is responsible for steering the boat while shouting orders and instructing his fellow teammates. This important role takes practice. Ollikkala spends roughly four hours a week on the water and a lot more time on land between cleaning up and preparing the boats and his individual workouts.

However, Ollikkala’s heavy school load as an IB student can cause him to miss practices from time to time.

“It really depends on school,” Ollikkala said. “If I’m not busy, I try to go every weekday [along with] practices on weekends…”

Although juggling school can be difficult, it did not stop Ollikkala from trying out and making the US National Under 24’s Team. Initially, he tried out for the Under 18’s Team, but they already had enough steersmen, so he was deferred to the Under 24’s Team which he was able to qualify for.

Before long, Ollikkala found himself on his way to Pattaya, Thailand for the 2023 Dragon Boat Racing Championships in early August of this year. While there, Ollikkala did not disappoint and returned home after his division received three silvers.

While Ollikkala has only been dragon boating for around two years, he has grown immensely in that time in both his maturity and leadership skills.

“Before, when he started, he was very quiet and would just mind his own business, but now he has developed the leadership [skills] and become more vocal so that people understand what he needs them to do,” Ollikkala’s coach Kitt Saca said.

Although Ollikkala would like to continue his dragon boating career in college, that may not be a realistic scenario.

“It depends where I end up,” Ollikkala said. “Again, it’s not a very large sport, so there aren’t good teams everywhere. We’re lucky to have like two really good competitive teams in Tampa, but where I’m going to college I don’t know if they’ll have any teams.”

Whether or not he is able to continue this passion of his in college, Ollikkala has gained many friends and opportunities from the time he has been able to spend dragon boating.

Charlotte Stone
Charlotte Stone, Co-Editor-in-Chief
Charlotte Stone is a senior at Robinson and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Knight Writers. This is her third year on staff and her third year as an editor. A nod to her original editorial position as Features Editor, Stone enjoys writing in-depth stories about her peers. “My favorite part of journalism is writing features stories,” Stone said. “I love learning about and sharing the unique stories of Robinson students.” An involved member of the Robinson community, Stone co-founded the RHS Film Club and serves as Captain of the girl’s tennis team. As a lover of the classical period, Stone additionally serves as the co-president of the Latin Club. To balance out her academic responsibilities, Stone pursues an eclectic mix of hobbies. “One of my hobbies is collecting sea glass. I started when I was younger and my collection has continued to grow so much since then,” Stone said. “I also love to play guitar. It’s a great creative outlet and helps me relax and take a break from academic responsibilities.” While Stone is fond of the features section, her well-rounded portfolio reflects her wide range of interests. From writing an A&E review to a Q&A, Stone showcases her unique perspective to create insightful, in-depth and engaging stories. As Co-Editor-in-Chief, Stone hopes to build a capable staff to secure the legacy of Robinson’s storied publication. Going into her final year on staff, Stone begins to look to the future. “Honestly I don’t really know what the future looks like for me,” Stone said. I’m not sure what I want to do, but I hope that I’ll be doing something that I love and doesn’t have anything to do with STEM.” (Profile by Vikram Sambasivan)

Janiece Mitchner, Senior Staff Writer
Janiece Mitchner is a junior at Robinson and a senior staff writer for Knight Writers. This is her second year on staff. While Mitchner was placed in journalism by chance, she has enjoyed the last year making drawings for the newspaper. "Since I suck at writing, I draw for the newspaper," Mitchner said. Mitchner has been drawing for five years and hopes to earn the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) Artist of the Year award in the future. "I usually draw characters, superheroes, anime characters and generally whatever looks interesting to me. It calms me when I draw and listen to music," Mitchner said. Besides art, Mitchner enjoys relaxing, volunteering for Girl Scouts and listening to music; particularly, her all-time favorite artist is Justin Bieber. The rest of Mitchner's time not designated towards art, school and music is put towards working at Qdoba, where she tends to work 20 hours a week. Mitchner has had to move multiple times due to her dad's military obligations. She has been living in Tampa for the last two years but does miss her last home in North Dakota. "Moving to Tampa has been kind of hard for me," Mitchner admitted. "I definitely miss having some snow, I'd rather be cold than hot." Besides North Dakota, Mitchner has also lived in Texas at two different times. Despite the numerous moves, Mitchner has stayed close with her family, including her younger brother and sister. Janiece, however, draws her ultimate inspiration from her mother. "She is my role model and is always able to balance all my siblings' requests. She's also very good at managing her time," Mitchner said. Mitchner is looking forward to graduating next year and plans to continue doing art actively as well as go on the culinary trip to Japan. "I hope that by the end of high school, my artwork will be in an art portfolio for college," Mitchner said. Profile by (Anika Sanka)
