The Robinson Lady Knights volleyball team had a shaky start to the season with the coaching position vacant. Ashley “AJ” Johnson and Cristina Matos filled the position not too long into the school year and are making quick progress despite the temporary setback.

On July 23, a volleyball parent sent out an email to various student athletes and parents explaining that their season typically began in the first days of August, yet there was no coach for this year.

Johnson, the varsity coach, picked up the position sometime during the first week of school and immediately began to grow attached to the team.

“Honestly, it’s not that bad. It’s better late than never if you ask me.” Johnson said. “It’s a great group of girls but we’re very senior heavy so I really want to take it states this year.”

Matos, who coaches JV, also takes on an optimistic goal for her team.

“If we all have fun, wins will come naturally,” Matos said. “We definitely have high potential and all the girls are high level players.”

For the past four years, the Lady Knights have lost to Bishop Moore in the FHSAA Class 6A State Semifinals matchup. But Jada Flanegan (’18) believes that they have a solid chance at advancing past the Hornets this year. This is Flanegan’s third season on the team and has seen a new head coach each year but believes Johnson may be the best one yet.

“Even though we started late, she’s a really good coach and we’re progressing quickly.” Flanegan said. “AJ is very relatable and easy-going so it’s easy to learn from her,  I know we’re going to do better than last year.”
