Timothy McKenzie, better known as Labrinth, has been climbing the charts ever since his hit single “Jealous” in 2014, and has now released a fifth album titled, “Ends and Begins.”

Labrinth’s music is heavily electronic and pop, which isn’t really my preferred genre of music, but with this album he makes it work perfectly.

Labrinth tells The Gentleman Journal that the album is inspired by space, as well as his wife and his life experiences. This definitely can be seen in the album through the strong electronic beats and subtle lyrics which creates a different view when listening.

“It’s inspired by space — a cosmic energy. But also, by my wife and my relationship” McKenzie said in the article. “All the songs are loosely based on themes and moments that happened in me and my missus’ relationship. It’s not deep, or phonetically telling the story. But more like: “This moment with my missus inspired this record.” So every record has a moment to it. And I wanted it to kind of be like Natural Born Killers in Space…”

The album opens with “The Feels” which is one of my favorites out of the 10-track album. It starts with the lyrics “I got hit by a truck” and a beat familiar to his other songs. Zendaya, an artist whom he collaborates with often, is featured on the song coming in on a verse. Her voice fits the song perfectly and even better with Labrinth’s, like always. This song consists of a perfect bridge and beat drop that I live for in Labrinth’s songs.

Another favorite of mine is “Never Felt So Alone” which features Billie Eilish. The song has been heard of before without Eilish’s vocals in the HBO hit-series Euphoria, but never released to the public until now. The entire vibe of the song is so relaxing yet exciting. The build up during Eilish’s verse of the song is so satisfying and one of the best parts of the whole album. Labrinth is consistent in his work and always gives 100% when releasing music, which I appreciate. Many artists tend to fall off after accumulating audiences such as he has.

A least favorite of mine was “A Turn of Events.” The song isn’t really a song, more of an interlude of some sort. It consists of “Uhs” and “I love you too’s” which kills the vibe of the album midway through as it’s track 5 of 10. I also dislike the beat and it’s very electronic for me.

As for the rest of the songs on the album, I think Labrinth did a phenomenal job of keeping his music and sound original to him and consistent, yet changing things up slightly to keep the listener entertained and hooked which I love as his music isn’t my first choice in genres.
